Meet VFA's Policy Intern, Anna Nemeth

Hello, my name is Adrianna Nemeth and I am one of the two interns at Voice for Adoption for 10 weeks this summer. I am currently a rising senior at Michigan State University pursing a bachelor’s degree in human development and family studies. I hope to continue my studies after my undergraduate degree to receive dual graduate degrees in social work and law. With the dual degree I hope to be able to advocate for children whose voice are all too often ignored.

While in East Lansing I have spent an abundance of time working in low income schools through many different programs and have seen how a child’s family and home life can greatly impact not only success in but also outside the classroom. Seeing these effects is what led me to pursue a helping profession degree to hopefully ensure that children are being offered every opportunity for success beginning in the home. This desire in turn led me to VFA since they are committed to serving the best interest of the child and do advocacy work that reflects this goal. I could not be more excited for all the things that I will learn this year about the foster care system and adoption so that I can continue serving children after leaving VFA.

I was lucky enough to grow up with a very close-knit family including my parents, my older sister and younger brother. Our family has always supported one another but also have pushed one another to continue to grow and become the best versions of ourselves. With no prior knowledge it would be nearly impossible to tell that my older sister was adopted through my father when we were young. For my young self at the time, this seemed like a seamless process but throughout the years I have come to learn the obstacles that my father went through to finalize this closed adoption. Additionally, in the last four years two of my close friends’ parents have begun their foster care experience of welcoming new children into their homes. However, other than this experience in my own family I have not had much direct experience with the foster care system or adoption process. I have a basic understanding of both of these systems, which is why I can’t wait to learn more about them especially on the policy side. I’m very excited to begin my journey in advocating for our nation’s children.
